The History of The Cape of Good Hope at Cape Point

The Origin story of The Cape of Good Hope

Cape Point is an area known for it's vicious winds and waves. It is here where hundreds of early sailors crashed their ships on the rocky environment after losing total control of their vessels to the weather.

Until today many shipwreck's can still be seen around The Cape Town coast and along Cape Point. During our Cape Point tours we might be able to spot some if visibilty allows. The southern coast of South Africa has been dubbed the graveyard of ships due to the Cape Town winds.

As the early Portuguese sailors started discovery tours around Cape Town on their way to India, they realised that they were up against severe conditions.

The first sailor to make it around Cape Point in 1488, Bartholomew Diaz, in fact called it the Cape of storms. He couldn't make it much further than Cape Point and decided to head back to Portugal.

Then another attempt was made by Vasco da Gama. He decided to go against the elements and try to sail around Cape Town and Cape Point again. He was successful and made it all the way to India and back to Portugal. When he returned to Portugal he renamed Cape Town and Cape Point to The Cape of Good Hope instead of Cape of Storms.

Our Cape Point tours will take us to these areas where their sailing took place. Two monuments are available to view at Cape Point during our tours, erected for these two sailors.
